- Lauryn's Kidney Transplant | UNC Kidney Center
-
- At the age of 4, Lauryn Mulder was diagnosed with a rare kidney disease known as IgA vasculitis. In the years that followed, she required a variety of medications, frequent blood work and regular clinic visits with her pediatric nephrologists at the UNC Kidney Center. For a while, efforts to preserve her kidney function were successful. But by the fall of 2017, the rapid decline of her kidney function required Lauryn be placed on the kidney transplant waiting list, and family members were evaluated as possible donors. In early 2018, it was necessary that she begin dialysis while she continued to pursue a living donor. Lauryn tells her story in this video, produced by her stepdad Mike Charbonneau.

- What Makes a Person Decide to Donate His Kidney To a Stranger? (14 minutes) | TEDxNatick, 2017
- It was an ordinary day for a retired businessman until he listened to a podcast and found that the subject resonated with him well beyond anything he could have imagined. The ramification of Ned's decision to make an altruistic donation was initially felt within his immediate family, but ultimately the ripple effects were far reaching and led to personal connections that Ned never could have foreseen.
- Let's create a national kidney donation exchange (11 minutes) | TEDxBirmingham, 2017
- In this innovative talk, transplant surgeon Dr. Jayme Locke shares an idea that could literally save thousands of lives. She explains how if we change the conversation around organ donation and assume altruism, we can exponentially increase the number of live donor matches. Dr. Jayme Locke is an abdominal transplant surgeon and director of the Incompatible Kidney Transplant Program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Dr. Locke specializes in innovative strategies for the transplantation of incompatible organs, disparities in access to and outcomes after solid organ transplantation, and transplantation of HIV-infected end-stage patients. Dr. Locke also serves as coordinator of the UAB Kidney transplant chain and has helped UAB build a nationally recognized incompatible kidney transplant program with one of the longest kidney transplant chains in the US.
